Do you think it's because of their supposed "wild" appearance?

There's nothing "supposed" about the wild appearance of a Bengal. Wild Asian Leopards were used to create the breed and some fanciers use wild cats in their breeding programs today. Once the cats are f3's -- three generations out from the wild cat -- they may be registered and shown as Bengals. Some people like to own f1s and f2's but that scares me. Bengals were my breed of choice until I watched them at a show about 11 years ago; they were too wild and crazy for me. You should hear one in heat! That said, I've watched them over the years and the good breeders have really worked on temperament, so you are no more likely to hear of a judge getting shredded by a Bengal now than a cranky Persian. My cats refuse to sit in a judging cage next to one, though.

Many of the pedigreed breeds are based on cats with recessive traits. What that means is one pedigreed cat bred to a cat of a different pedigreed breed will probably just give you a "mutt cat" that carries some very fancy genes.

Bengals, followed by Norwegian Forest cat.
I have met one of each - the Bengal was gorgeous and very social. Loved the calm temperament of the Norwegian.

Actually, that's not true. They originated using leopard CATS, not leopards. The following site has some great history and info on Bengals and other cats that have bred bred using wild/domestic crosses

We currently have two Maine coon Mixes and I love them to death. I'd either get a Maine Coon or one of these...
He is a Javanese. His registered name is HLK's Heavenly Kidd. My biological grandmother and biological dad breed and show these guys. I think I got his registered name right, his nickname is Peanut

I love his big ears too. I told Lee (my bio dad) that I wasn't sure whether to run rom him or hug him..cause he looks snuggly and mean all at the same time...he said hugs would be more welcome as Peanut is a lover not really a fighter unless its after bed time, then he becomes guard cat.
